According to a NPD report, not only are video games considered by some to be a stress reliever, but also 63% of the population in the U.S. plays video games.

It is suggested by NPD that there are a large number of video gamers that enjoy this pursuit as a group or family activity and like to spend time playing video games together with other people. This in itself perhaps contradicts the common view that gamers always sit alone in front of the computer screen. Just as we were beginning to assume that there are many people who may prefer their computer to other people, it appears that this can be a sociable form of entertainment after all. In addition, it is reported that many video gamers consider this form of activity as a good way to reduce stress levels. Not only do many people enjoy video games as a great activity but they also view this pursuit as a good way of winding down.

It is reported that the large figure of 63% of the U.S. population do participate in video games. Such games include PC games, console and portable games, kids systems and mobile device games. With regards to the amount of time spent playing on video games, research details suggest that 40% of U.S. gamers spend approximately the same amount of time as last year, 30% play more and 30% play for less time. Research for the NPD report was taken from over 5,000 surveys made online in October 2007.

Anita Frazier, industry analyst at the NPD group stated "The new type of game experiences brought to the market over the past several years are succeeding in reaching a broader audience. The challenge for the industry is that consumers are a fickle group, and with the great variety of options pulling at their limited free time, they're going to be easily distracted unless something really compels them to stay with gaming." She also noted that "to reach these less involved consumers, the industry has to work even harder, but doing so can produce great rewards".
