With the arrival of the holiday season, it has been reported that in the United Kingdom, sales for the year 2007 within the gaming industry have reached a record breaking figure of £1.52 billion.

In the direct lead up to the holidays, over £87.9 million has been spent on video games. According to the BBC, the yearly record breaking amount of £1.52 billion price figure accounts for 78 million pieces of gaming software. Further, it is reported that before the holiday selling period, during the 3rd quarter of 2007, the U.K. saw the sales of 11 million game consoles. This number shows a 33% rise over last year's records as gamers purchased new options on the market such as Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation3. It is interesting to note that console games constitute 79% of the software sales. Even before the end of December, it is reported that gaming sales have increased by 25% over the same period last year.

It is clear that video games have become a popular form of entertainment and such products now have a general appeal, suitable for young and old. In addition, it appears that the popularity of the Wii and the introduction of new hardware have made quite a significant impact on the figures in the U.K. gaming market.

This large increase in sales ensures that 2007 is the biggest year so far in the history of video games in the UK.

It is also perhaps interesting to note the most popular video games in the U.K. in the approach to the holidays. The titles racing in close competition for the top of the UK video game charts are 'Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games', 'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare' and 'FIFA 08'.
