It has been announced that the game title 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games' has reached the number of 5 million sales worldwide.
The first collaboration between Sonic the hedgehog and Mario the plumber have produced impressive global sales figures in their Olympic antics. The game 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games' that is available on Wii and Nintendo DS enables characters from Mario's and Sonic's separate fields to come together and take part in the Olympic Games. Sega has handled the publishing of the game in Europe and North America while such issues in Japan were taken care of by Nintendo. The Sega Corporation has confirmed that in a period of a little more than three months, this popular video game has sold five million copies around the world.
Simon Jeffery, President and COO of SEGA of America, noted that "With adored icons and fun game play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has shot to the top of the sales charts and is clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers that want an engaging and accessible gaming experience".
It is reported that during the peak holiday season 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games' was among the top best ten sellers in the United States. When this game was introduced to Europe it also became an instant success. In addition, following the release of 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games' in Europe, this game became the number one selling video game in England in January 2008.
Simon Jeffery also noted that "The market for entertaining games that everyone can enjoy is growing faster than any other segment in the industry, thanks in part to the explosive popularity of Wii and Nintendo DS. A key element of our growth strategy at SEGA is to develop and publish games that appeal to this expanding market."
Sega is finalizing details of its Olympics Games video game 'Beijing 2008', which is expected for release later this year.
