LucasArts, the Star Wars publisher, is apparently leaving the folds of the Entertainment Software Association, but still intends to attend the 2008 E3 event.

Recent weeks have brought about news from publishers Activision and Vivendi that they do not intend to renew membership with the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) or to participate in its annual event. Following the departure of Activision and Vivendi from this gaming industry organization, it now appears that another top name in the game publishing field, LucasArts is leaving the ESA.

It seems that LucasArts, famous publisher of Star Wars games, will also not be renewing membership with the ESA. However, LucasArts seemingly will still attend the annual E3 Media and Business Summit scheduled for July 15-17 in Los Angeles.

In a statement on May 16, 2008, issued by Rich Taylor, the Senor Vice President of Communications and Research, at the Entertainment Software Association, he noted that "Since its creation in 1994, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has grown and evolved into the pre-eminent voice of the video and computer game industry. The organization has 25 members, including three companies that were welcomed last year."

He stated that "Today, we can confirm that one of our members, LucasArts, has decided not to renew its membership. We value each member of our association, but respect the unique factors that led to LucasArts' decision."

Mr. Taylor added that "Last year was a record year for an industry which is becoming an increasingly important part of the nation's social, cultural and economic landscape. We are confident the industry will continue to thrive and ESA will continue to create a beneficial environment for the entire entertainment software industry."

Perhaps this will lead to additional publishing companies following suit in the future. Only time will tell.
