There are changes abound for PlayStation 3 purchasers, including reduced prices, a brand new 40GB slim model and a white version especially for the Japanese home market.
Sony, seemingly wishing to increase their holiday sales have announced price cuts for PS3 around the world. It seems that Sony's sales targets may have been affected by strong competition from less expensive consoles, such as the Wii and Xbox 360. For this reason, it appears that Sony have revealed the cuts in price and are introducing the new model at a lower price.
Sony announced intentions to lower its price by 10% for the 20 G-byte model. This means a charge of ₤188 instead of ₤210 and $384 instead of $427. These prices are due to be lowered in mid October. The new selling price of the 60 G-byte version has not yet been revealed, although is also expected to be lower.
There are also additional delights in store – or soon to be in store – for Japanese customers. Sony is due to introduce a brand new PS3 model which will be available in white for members of the market in Japan. This 40GB model is expected to be released in Japan on 11 November at a selling price of $341 or ₤168. This cut-down version of the PS3 has a disc drive of 40 G-byte rather than 60 G-byte. It should also be noted that PS2 games will not be able to be played on this new slim-line model. This cut-down model with its cheaper price will also be introduced to markets in Europe, Australia and some parts of Africa and Asia.
