An article issued by Forbes claims that European gamers seem to prefer sports games and casual gaming rather than first person shooter games and action packed adventure pursuits.
In Europe, football seems to be such a popular pastime, that it seems only natural that this attraction and interest would be transferred into the gaming industry. In an article featured on the Forbes website, it is claimed that football and racing games are preferred by European gamers, while the favorite games in the United States in general seem to be first person shooters and adventure games. In the piece, it is discussed that guns and gore sell less well in Europe as the European gamers appear to prefer casual games rather than epic adventure pursuits.
In the article, it is mentioned that Cevat Yerli, the Crytek CEO and also director of FPS Crysis notes his personal opinion implying that Europeans are of the belief that shooters are 'evil'. Perhaps it should be mentioned also that the Crytek Company focus on first person shooters. This could also relate to his disappointment that first person shooters apparently do not sell as well over Europe as they do in the United States.
It is interesting to note that the best selling console game in 2007 in Europe was 'Brain Training' for the DS. At the same time, EA's 'Fifa 2008' came in second place. In contrast, the best selling game in the U.S. for the year 2007 was Halo 3.
